7th April 2009

A bright and breezy southwesterly brought the best Wheatear day so far of the spring with 10 birds, two of which were of the Greenland race that normally pass through Hilbre later in April than the nominate race. The 3 Common Scoters and the Merlin are still in residence and there were some good records of 4 Canada Geese and 4 Jackdaws also some more regular migrants such as 100 Meadow Pipits, 2 Willow Warblers, 3 Swallows and 5 Sand Martins.

The waders in Niffy bay (right) included at least 9 Purple Sandpipers still present although they will not stay much longer.

An intensive high tide sea-watch produced Razorbills and Guillemots, Gannets, Red-throated Divers, a Sandwich tern, and best of all, a Goldeneye.
