7th May 2015

Weather: WNW 2, 7/8 cloud, good vis, some cloud

The day began quietly enough with a light westerly breeze and some spots of rain in the air during the morning.

A Sedge Warbler was found mid morning in one of the Heligoland traps but other than a single White Wagtail there was little other evidence of passerine migration.

Six Canada Geese flew west over the seals hauled out on the West Hoyle; Greys had increased to at least 350 and there were at least 4 Common Seals hauled out too.

The highlight of the morning was the increase once again of the Dunlin flocks on the rising tide with at least 7,500 birds (the vast majority in splendid summer plumage).

These were joined by two calling Common Sandpipers below the Obs and a Grey Plover further up the gutter.  A single Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 Curlew, 7 Whimbrel and several Sanderling in both winter and summer dress joined in the wader fest and good numbers of Ringed Plover were found along the ridge as observers best the rising tide off the island.

Shelduck numbers at last increased slightly with 6 pairs seen today and the male Skylark flew over the Obs singing, Linnets were very active carrying nesting material.
