9th July 2021

Weather:  SE force 1   cloudy and mild

A juvenile Whitethroat was a surprise find in the obs garden mist net this morning. Quite often a wandering warbler is found in mid-summer probably as a result of post juvenile dispersal.

The regular Whitethroat that has been here singing all summer did not show at all today. We were doubly blessed this morning when we also ringed a juvenile Chiffchaff, also caught in the obs garden.

Three juvenile Wrens were ringed, but this time they will almost certainly be island bred birds.

On that subject it is pleasing to report that both nests of Swallows have now sucessfully fledged young. A juvenile Pied Wagtail was sat on the garden fence.

The very calm sea did not send in any sea birds, just an immature Gannet cruised by while 2 summer plumaged Dunlin were at the north end with 2 Redshank.

The female Eider sat in it's usual position.

A Rock Pipits bathed in in a puddle on the rocks near the south slipway.

Two Kestrels roamed the island from mid-morning.

Ringed: 3 Wrens, 2 Linnets, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Whitethroat.
