10th January 2024

Weather: NE force 3 backing NNE later

It was a pleasant day on Hilbre today, sunny and not as cold as it might have been. The highlight of the day was the (distant) sighting of a Long-tailed Duck. Records of this species are faily frequent from the north shore in winter but Hilbre is further away for regular appearances. Other species out to sea were a Red-throated Diver, 2 Great Crested Grebes, a Guillemot, 2 Razorbills and 250 Common Scoter.

Regulars not so far out were 3 of the Eiders and 4 Goosanders. It was puzzling that despite a strongish easterly wind some of the 450 Brent Geese and waders spent the entire tide in Niffy Bay.

There were 16 Purple Sandpipers to be seen also a Raven and the Kestrel.

A Robin was caught for ringing.
