1st July 2022

Weather: WSW force 3, veering WNW 4 and SW 6 by late afternoon

There were a total of 5 Eiders here today, all female types when the regular one was joined by another female on the whaleback and then 3 others appeared on the sea towards the west hoyle bank.

After the tide there was a small roost of Sandwich Terns on the east hoyle as well as many feeding in the gutter and off the north end.

The sea was very active with 120 Sandwich Terns altogether and 42 Gannets, but a moribund Kittiwake was a sad figure on the west side below the pond.

There seems to have been an explosion of Wrens recently (13 recorded today) with young heard calling all around the main island. Six Little Egrets were about and 3 Grey Herons roosted on Middle, while 3 Bar-tailed Godwits (2 in summer plumage) were nice returning records among the waders, but even better was a Greenshank heard calling and then spotted flying in and landing by the gutter between the main islands but it was then disturbed and it flew back out northward.

The only birds that could be described as land migrants were 2 Collared Doves that landed on the obs fence and then the roof but only stayed briefly.
