1st January 2023

Weather: SW force 4, rain early, showers with sunny intervals later

On a post tide New Years day visit the heavy rain soon cleared after dawn. The first sighting of interest was a pair of Ravens displaying over Middle Eye.

A group of 4 Pintail flew south west passed the north end into the river,

and 145 Pink-footed Geese flew in the same direction but down the Wirral coast.

Several flocks of Common Scoter were on the sea, 2 of which were close to the island.

Single Guillemot and Great Crested Grebe were also on the sea

About 700 Cormorant had earlier flown out to sea.

The first bird to be ringed this year was a female Blackbird, another was present also 2 Song Thrushes.

As the tide was low, 9 Purple Sandpipers were feeding along the east side gutter with small numbers of other waders. When the sun poked through 2 Wrens burst into song.

Not a bad morning for a short visit in mid-winter.
