18th September 2025

Weather: NE force 0/1    rain front mid-morning

A late morning visit after the rain found 6 Wheatears on the island, some were similar looking to the Greenland race.

A Red-breasted Merganser was noted and a Goosander flew in from Wales and headed towards joining at least 11 others that were on the West Kirby marine lake.

A large count of 185 Shelduck were here and 820 Common Scoter were out to sea, while a female Eider was near the island.

The round-up of wildfowl is completed with 8 pale-bellied Brent Geese.

A good count of 365 Curlew was made.

.. with 86 Redshank, 35 Turnstone and 4 Bar-tailed Godwit. About the island were 4 Robins, a Pied Wagtail, 8 Meadow Pipits and 11 Rock Pipits, a good many of which are colour ringed in our Hilbre Rock Pipit study.

Four Great Crested Grebes floated on the sea, 16 Little Egrets and  3 Grey Herons also fed. The Grey Seal was again between the islands.

The Red Admirals have not finished yet, 6 were still here today.
