11th June 2023

Weather: ESE force 0/1   mist and muggy

Three Greylag Geese flew over the south end to the east soon after the tide. Then while watching the sea the Black Guillemot was noticed from the obs balcony out to sea to the north east..A look from the north end saw it flying around, joining the Oystercatchers  on the rocks, and every now and then going for a fly around.

More usual seabirds seen were a Guillemot, a Great Crested Grebe, 80 Sandwich and 20 Common Tern, while the Eiders did not disappoint, 2 were on the whaleback again  (immature male and female). A Chiffchaff was near the entrance of the 'heli' trap and duly became ringed, a very late bitd at Hilbre.

Three Swifts visited in typical 'heavy' weather. the shorebirds were few and far between at this season and state of the tide, 4 Curlew, a Ringed PLover, 5 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons  Flying insects included a Cinnabar moth and a Emperor dragonfly. The moth trap last night was probably the best catch of the year, about 100 insects of over 20 species. The caterpillar of the Buff-tip Moth is regular on the island at this time of year.

The Yellow Shell is well named,

This small moth is a similar colour but not as well known, Agapeta hamana

Not forgetting, one of our regulars, Angle shades

Another lovely day in terms of weather and interesting creatures.
