9th September 2025

Weather: ESE force 4,  slight mist around the estuary,  SE 4/5 middle of the afternoon

A juvenile Common Buzzard came in off the sea and then went south down the reef, briefly alighting a couple of times before heading off low east again landing on the beach before turning inland over the south end of RL Golf Course (intermittently mobbed by crows).

Although a common bird now even on north Wirral, Common Buzzard is an unusual visitor to the islands, indeed sightings of Marsh Harrier or Osprey are much more expected. Another scarce Hilbre raptor turned up soon afterwards when an adult Hobby flew in over middle, going off south east - came back, chased something, then went south east again.

A Spotted Flycatcher was on the island over the tide and a male Blackcap was here from early.

Two Goldcrests, 2 Willow Warblers and 3 Chiffchaffs and were in the paddocks and gardens.

Passing through were 42 Swallows and 6 House Martins, also a small passage of 40 Meadow Pipits came south. Not to be outdone 4 Wheatears arrived.

Two Common Snipe flew west across the island.

A male Wigeon sat on the tide edge. We found the culprit of the scat around the island today, a Weasel.

Ringed: 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap, 1 Meadow Pipit, 1 Robin.
