Our registered scheme for fitting Rock Pipits with individually coded Darvic rings is already producing results. We’ve now marked 6 Rock Pipits and as well as regular sightings from Obs members we’ve had one sighting of CAB, photographed by a visitor to Hilbre, on the 5th of July. CAB is an adult and one of a breeding pair on the island. CAF is a juvenile marked on the 4th August and was recently photographed at Hoylake Lifeboat Station by Anthony Ramsden who has kindly let us use his photographs. This is the first sighting of one of our Rock Pipits from Hilbre and is likely to be one of the offspring of CAB. One of the aims of the project was to try and gather information of post juvenile dispersal. It’ll be interesting to see if CAF returns to Hilbre or whether this is in fact a juvenile moving away from ts natal site. Hilbre is a small island and can only support a few number of Rock Pipit territories so it makes sense that young birds have to leave & find their own territories. At its closest point Hoylake Lifeboat Station is 2.3 miles in a straight line from Hilbre so this represents quite a movement for a young bird.
