20th March 2023

Weather: W force 1,  increasing 3 by noon

A quiet morning, the overnight rain had ceased not too long after dawn. The main emphasis was on the breeding species although during the morning 2 Wheatears were found on the island. A new Robin was ringed,

and several wintering birds were retrapped for monitoring. One of the Blackbirds was ringed as a juvenile in 2021, as was the Rock Pipit and one of the Wrens.

The 6 Eider spent the tide just off the obs garden.

The 7 Purple Sandpipers seen spent it in Niffy Bay with a few Turnstone.

A male and female Mallard spent a lot of time looking around the island trying to find a nesting site and one of the Crows was sitting on the chimney of the warden’s house with what looked like nesting material. Later in the afternoon 4 Goosanders appeared at the north end.

 Ringed : 1 Robin.
