Weather: SW force 4 sunny and warm in the morning
Our observers were in the paddock above Niffy Bay when they spotted a Great Northern Diver just out from Niffy bay, it headed in towards them but then turned and went north down the island, giving plenty of opportunity for photographs, it was a juvenile and probably the bird that has been on the West Kirby marine lake recently.
Four of the Red-throated variety was a more normal sighting at Hilbre, together with 9 Great Crested Grebes and 50 Common Scoter. A female Scoter was near the island.
At the high tide 500 Knot were around Middle as the tide advanced, and 6,000 on the shore later.
The 10 Purple Sandpiper roosted in 3 different places with one by itself.
Most of the 150 Turnstone rested on Lion rock in Niffy bay (together with a single Purple Sandpiper), which has not happened much recently.
Over 90 Shelduck fed just east of the marsh after tide. The male Eider was the only one noted today and was below the Obs garden on the ebb.
Migration was confined to a few Meadow Pipits while 2 Pied Wagtail were down briefly at the North End and a
single Linnet flew overhead going south. The most significant arrivals were up to 15 Wrens, many of which were new arrivals with 5 being ringed today, all being juveniles.
