5th November 2023

Weather: WNW force 3/4 rain showers

For those hoping for the Pallas's Warbler of yesterday to be still here will be disappointed, a search of the island failed to produce anything other than 2 Goldcrests.

In addition, the only significant movement was a passage overhead of 450 Starlings. The change in wind direction from the north west may have been responsible for a large influx of Brent Geese, 442 were counted this morning.

Other wildfowl this morning included 200 Pink-footed Geese, 12 Shelduck, a Common Scoter and a single Eider. The long awaited arrival of the first Purple Sandpipers of the autumn/winter ended today when 2 were at the north end. One was first seen in flight with Turnstones and then another on the rocks in the poor light before the heavy rain.

More regular species recently seen were counted at 3,000 Knot, 200 Dunlin, 120 Curlew, 50 Sanderling and 30 Redshank. No raptors today and just 2 Little Egrets. As members left the island they were able to see the Great Northern Diver which was found at the West Kirby Marine Lake yesterday. Speculation is that it could be the same bird that flew passed the lake and over Hilbre on Monday this week, we shall never know for sure.

The Goosanders are of course now regular residents on the lake in the winter.
