5th October 2021

Weather: WNW force 5/6, rain early then NW 6/7 in the afternoon.

The forecast looked good for some sea birds today but the morning was fairly quiet, two Ravens were about, a Golden Plover was near Middle, a late Sandwich Tern (first year) was near by before the tide, and a first winter Mediterranean Gull flew passed the obs. The real action commenced after 14.00hrs on the ebb tide as the wind strengthened and veered slightly to the north west. Three Leach's Petrels were pushing through towards the west (two more were added later). Shots are taken from video grabs.

Three Manx Shearwaters joined the sea list alongside a Razorbill, 2 Gannets, 3 Guillemots, 3 juvenile Kittiwakes and 2 Red-throated Divers. A juvenile Sabines Gull was on the east hoyle about 3pm when it then lifted off to fly past the obs and along the gutter to the north end, a most exciting show by this sought after gull.

The afternoon continued in fine style when a Bonxie was on the east hoyle. This follows one that flew past the island a week ago, this time it seems to be hanging around the area.

None sea birds today included 43 Brent, 11 Pintail, 425 Curlew. 650 Sanderling, 135 Shelduck. A single Robin was ringed. With the wind continuing through most of the night, one wonders what may occur tomorrow ?
