17th August 2025

Weather: ESE force 3/4,   E 4/5 in afternoon

A Great White Egret was seen feeding off the west side of Middle as the tide flooded. but did not settle for photographs. Great White Egret is still a very scarce sighting at Hilbre despite being now quite numerous further down the estuary. A second summer Mediterranean Gull was on the shore which is now not unusual at this time of year. Three Wheatear and a Willow Warbler were migrants on the island this morning, while 2 Swallows fed about, although a total of 52 Swallows were seen feeding between the shore and Little Eye. A Grey Wagtail arrived, also a pair of Pied Wagtails. A Woodpigeon showed as well and residents seen included 3 Blackbirds, 3 Wrens and a Rock Pipit. A Gannet, 2 Shags and a Scoter were on the sea with 310 Sandwich Terns. Wader numbers included 280 Ringed Plover, 200 Dunlin, 120 Redshank, 3 Bar-tailed Godwit, a Whimbrel, 40 Turnstone.

 and  6 Sanderling

 also 250 Curlew.

A Peregrine visited the island, 10 Little Egret and 3 Grey Herons were on the shore. A massive influx of Red Admirals arrived at the island, estimated at 200 insects. also lots of Harlequin ladybirds apparently also on the move. Three moth traps were deployed this morning yielding several hundred moths for our insect expert to study. Some of the interesting ones were :

Small Mottled Willow

Gem
