18th August 2025

 Weather: E force 4/5     cloudy

A very quiet morning on the island, a couple of Willow Warblers that were here soon after dawn disappeared almost immediately although a couple of Wheatears that were around Wheatear hill increased during the morning to 5 at midday.

Five Swallows turned up to feed over the island but apart from the presence of a White and a Pied Wagtail and the Rock Pipits there was little else to keep the observers interest.

There are still 4 Shags at the north end, giving the opportunity to look at the differences from the Cormorants (30 today) when both species are together on the rocks.

At least one of the 2 male Scoters that have been local to the island lately was at the north end. The 28 Shelduck recorded included a flock of 22 flying west towards Wales. Eleven Little Egrets fed at the islands today with 2 Grey Herons but only 1 Whimbrel was heard and waders were few in general at the lowish tide: 1 Sanderling, 120 Ringed Plover, 100 Dunlin etc. Red Admiral butterflies again turned up in large numbers probably near to a hundred. The moth trap again produced a bumper crop for inspection.
