Weather: SE force 1, mist , later NNW 1
A misty start to the morning with just 120 Pinkeet passing north, there was only one Willow Warbler on the island but migrants were about from early when a couple of Yellow Wagtails went over and then the first Redstart of the year (a female) was caught for ringing
It was a good Wheatear day as 10 arrived including 2 Greenland birds, one of the Wheatears allowed a close approach of the photographers. It should be remembered that some of these birds may seldom have seen a human being before and we make no appologies for including a large selection of images.
Despite the pacity of warblers (Willow below) we had 4 White Wagtails and 5 Sand Martins on passage and visits by both Sparrowhawk and Raven. It turned out to be an above average finch day however with 14 Siskins, 15 Lesser Redpolls and 4 Goldfinches.
In common with recent days the placid waters facilitated a comprehensive sea watch, todays haul of records included 12 Gannets, 18 Little Gulls, 17 Red-breasted Mergansers, 20 Guillemot, 13 Razorbills, and still increasing numbers of Sandwich Terns (220), and 14 Common Terns. Most waders are decreasing in numbers now, but one that is slowly building up to a spring passage peak is Whimbrel, there were 3 on show today. The benign weather conditions enable the setting of the moth traps and the best record this morning was of a Swallow Prominent, the first here since 1999.
