2nd September 2021

 Weather:  NE force 3

A lot of cloud again this morning but this time a few migrants arrived on the island, with 3 Willow Warblers and a Sedge Warbler being caught for ringing.

In the afternoon an unexpected fall of birds took place with up to 20 new Willow Warblers grounded

 and a splendid male Redstart

which spent some time around the barbeque in the obs garden.

A Reed Warbler was also downed, still a  rare bird at hilbre but becoming almost annual in the last few years. Many small waders such as 60 Sanderling and 140 Dunlin were feeding on the shore below the obs and an adult Little Stint was identified amongst them, this is the second at Hilbre this autumn.

Other waders included a Bar-tailed Godwit and 30 Ringed Plover. Sea birds logged were 9 Gannets, 15 Scoter and 4 Great Crested Grebes. Two Wheatears also arrived in the afternoon and a Mediterranean Gull and a Teal was again about the island. Before the fall of migrants ringing had continued and included a Robin which was also probably a migrant.

A Meadow Pipit and 3 Rock Pipits were retrapped, the Meadow Pipit has been here at least for over 3 years.

The Rock Pipits seemed to be queuing to acess the potter traps.

Kestrel and Peregrine both showed up
