19th October 2022

 Weather: ESE force 5

Huge movements of thrushes were seen this morning in keeping with many parts of the country, In a blustery south easterly 1,125 Redwings and a minimum of 26 Fieldfares went south over the islands in just a couple of hours mid-morning, many flocks may have been missed early in the day.

Others were also seen heading south over mainland Wirral. Single Song Thrush and Redwing were ringed.

A Chiffchaff was here but the pride of place must go to a late Garden Warbler caught and ringed.

A flock of 18 Pink-footed Geese headed south west passed the island.

Only a single Skylark today but finches moving were mostly Chaffinches (15) with 2 Siskin. Among the 166 Brent was an individual that had been colour ringed in Canada in 2014 and was first seen at Hilbre in 2019.

A very nice surprise for the observers was the finding of a Black Redstart at the south west corner of the island. It was slowly drifting south down the rocks.
