Weather: ESE force 3/4 mist around the estuary
Proof that Black Terns are still around Liverpool bay came when one flew passed the north end this afternoon. There did not seem to be many passerines at first apart from 7 Wheatears, however 2 phylloscopus warblers were seen, later one Willow Warbler was in the mist net.
and then a Whitethroat unexpectedly turned up.
Several Robins also arrived to be ringed. A Goldcrest and a Stonechat was here, possibly the Stonechat was the one from yesterday. Despite the Black Tern sighting (by visiting birders) sea birds were few and far between; a single Arctic Skua, 7 Great Crested Grebes, 42 Common Scoter, 2 Common Terns plus 2 Shags. There were the usual waders around the tide, the picture shows a whimbrel in Niffy Bay roosting with Redshank and Turnstones.
The Oystercatchers reached a new high at 11,500 roosting, also 327 Curlew, 200 Ringed Plover, 600 Dunlin, 44 Trunstone, 12 Sanderling and 15 Bar-tailed Godwits. Regulars today were the 3 Eiders, the Kestrel, and 7 Little Egrets.
Ringed: 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Wren, 1 Whitethroat, Robins 4.
