9th September 2023

Weather: SE force 2, fog near the islands, mist by the coast.

A foggy start but migrants did not respond and only a few were through today. Overhead movement was almost non-existent with just a Grey Wagtail, 4 Pied Wagtails and 2 Redpolls calling attention to themselves. In the paddocks and gardens were 2 Goldcrests and a Chiffchaff. Larger species brought more interest with a second Brent Goose after yesterdays first arrival.

The 3 Eiders are now expected to be present, today the eclipse drake was seen to catch a crab.

Early morning a single Wigeon was seen and a Teal flew into the gutter.

A Shag stood on the whaleback.

The colour ringed Cormorant (ZWR) seen the other day was also near the whaleback. There were about 17 Little Egrets around today. A look at the sea through the heavy mist managed to see 7 Little Gulls feeding out to the west of the island and 8 Gannets to the north west. Also out to the west a Razorbill sat on the calm sea preening, while 6 of its cousins the Guillemots and 3 Red-breasted Mergansers were noted. The sea was like a mill pond and enabled an easy sighting of a Harbour Porpoise. After the low early morning tide Dunlin, Ringed Plover and a Grey Plover were near the ridge and 11 Bar-tailed Godwits were seen. Two Whimbrel showed up later as well as the 180 Curlew.

There was just the one regular Kestrel sighted this morning.

There were about 12 Red Admirals again and 4 Migrant Hawker dragonflies.
