6th March 2024

 Weather: SE force 4

The mist kept rolling in and out all morning

A similar mix of birds to the last 2 days but with greater numbers, no doubt brought in by varying visibility. Early on a Fieldfare was seen on a fence and was caught for ringing. It stayed about the island most of the day. Fieldfares are sometimes seen coming through in spring and especially autumn but not often trapped on the island.

A Redwing turned up in the SK area mid afternoon. Two more Blue Tits were here.

There were double figures of Goldcrest, unusual for so early in March, they seemed to be on the move through the islands, these photos were from Middle Eye.

After a blank yesterday a dozen Skylarks passed over, as did 3 Jackdaws tracking south, and there was a small passage of Meadow Pipits and a Pied Wagtails. Several finches were about, 9 Siskins, 6 Goldfinch and 3 Chaffinch. In addition to the finches their close relatives 5 House Sparrows were here again. A movement of Robins was also obvious through the islands, 6 were ringed today. Three Ravens flew in off the sea.

Regulars were here including the 3 Eiders and 10 Goosanders off the north end. At the low tides at the moment waders become less easy to track down, there were 45 Sanderling, 70 Turnstone  but only 4 Purple Sandpipers seen although more will be in the area, they were feeding at the edge of the tide by the lagoon.

One of the Oystercatchers seems to prefer feeding on the grass.

The Dark-bellied bird is still with the Brent flock, 4 Common Scoter floated about and a Red-breasted Merganser was out on the north end.

Only 4 Linnets were noticed, many more will be here to breed later.

Ringed today: 2 Goldcrest, 6 Robins, 1 Fieldfare, 1 Song Thrush.
