8th March 2024

Weather: E force 3/4 increasing later 5   mist

With a cold easterly wind the passerine movement of the last few days stopped and attention turned back to waders and duck. There were five Eider today with a new female joining the female and 3 males that are regularly seen.

Some of the Brent Geese fed and bathed in Niffy Bay.

Just 3 Goosanders were here today, a male and 2 females.

Unusually, one of the 7 Purple Sandpiper noted fed on top of Lion Rock, although it was not a high tide.

Fifty Turnstone, 12 Knot, 25 Dunlin and 17 Redshank were recorded around the island but a further 50 Redshank were found feeding on the wet shore in front of Riversdale Road (still in the Obs recording area). Five Ringed Plover were with them.

A Great Crested Grebe and Sixteen Common Scoter were the best on the sea.
