It is with great regret that Hilbre Bird Observatory passes on the news of David Hussell’s death. He died suddenly at the age of 81 after a brain haemorrhage on 10 April 2015.
David was introduced to the Obs through Franz Bairlein’s Wheatear network and visited Hilbre and the Obs on 17 April 2012 as part of that project meeting Obs members DB, JE and CJW.
David was born in the UK but came to prominence as an ornithologist in his adopted country, Canada. He was one of the founder members of the Long Point Bird Observatory, Ontario, and its first director.
He has a huge body of professional work to his name on subjects as diverse as Wheatears, raptor migration, Tree Swallows and he was a supporter of collaboration between professional ornithologists and bird watchers, seeing citizen science as a key idea in the development of his subject.
David won awards for his work from the Society of Canadian Ornithologists, the Hawk Migration Association of North America, and the Nuttall Ornithological Society. Please see more info here http://www.hmana.org/remembering-david-hussell/
We pass our condolences to Ricky, his wife, and the other members of his family.
