11th August 2023

Weather: SW force 6 late afternoon, force S 3 by evening.

A late afternoon visit turned up 3 Mediterranean Gulls amongst the 500 or so Black-headed Gulls in the east side gutter. Two were adults and one a first winter. The Sandwich Tern roost contained 430 birds including some birds still feeding with 30 Common Terns also recorded, and 4 Gannets were out to sea on the tide, while a Shag was also noted. There were 102 Curlew on the tide edge and 3 Whimbrel around the island. The usual waders still pleased us with their presence including 14 Turnstone, many still in summer plumage.

The Eider is still here. The Kestrel hunted the island again, it was the only raptor seen.

On many visits now Rock Pipits outnumber Meadow Pipits,

But a few Meadow Pipits were feeding young.

Four Pied Wagtails are still here, presumably a pair with young bred on the island.

A fern growing on the eastern side cliffs of the island is known as Sea Spleenwort because it relies on sea spray to form its preferred habitat, because of this it is a naturally scarce species although it looks nondescript to the casual observer.

A beautiful evening as the sun went down, what will tomorrow bring ?
