9th August 2023

Weather: SSE force 2  dry and warm

A morning visit found the trapping areas bereft of migrants, possibly because it was clear overnight. The air however was active with migrant Swallows (23) and 2 House Martins. The other highlight of the morning was a quick fly through by a Sparrowhawk, unfortunately it did not stay. Waders are now increasing; there were 3 Whimbrel.and 60 Curlew.

.......while smaller species featured 25 Ringed Plover, 40 Dunlin, 12 Turnstone, 12 Redshank and 75 Sanderling on the reef during the ebb tide.

The immature male Eider arrived on the whaleback mid-morning. Other birds present in the sunshine were 15 Little Egrets, 250 Sandwich and 2 Common Terns and 5 Grey Herons roosting the tide on the east side of Middle,

As the morning warmed up several dozen Black-headed Gulls took to the sky over the island, seemingly catching flying ants. Blackbirds seem to be still feeding young at this late stage of summer, while some juveniles are also around. Early flying butterflies included 6 Small Whites and 4 Common Blues.

An Emperor Dragonfly began patrolling up and down the open water areas of the main pond, a real test for ambitious photographer to try and follow the erratic movements of the insect.
