25th March 2022

Weather:  SE force 2/3  haze and mist, late afternoon NE 1

The small migrants were not quite so prolific as earlier in the week, nevertheless counts of 15 Goldfinches, 5 Siskin, 3 Chaffinches, 4 Pied Wagtails and a Reed Bunting were not to be dismissed, in addition there were a few dozen passage Meadow Pipits, 5 Skylarks, 3 Starlings and a Jackdaw to be considered.

The presence of 5 Goldcrests on the island somewhat made up for the lack of warblers or Wheatears, while a fly-through drake Eider enhanced the beautifully warm day.

A search off shore for any Little Gulls yielded dividends when 25 were seen moving east, we hope to see more over the next few weeks. Not much else on the sea but 30 Common Scoter, 5 Red-breasted Merganser and a Great Crested Grebe. A surprise late afternoon arrival was a Stonechat on the fences.

Little Egrets were in numbers not occuring here for many months with a total of 13 logged today. Brent were counted at 282 pale-bellied plus 2 dark.

A large Curlew flock on the bank after the tide, enabled a combined total of 204 birds. A Kestrel was the sole raptor. A pair of Goosander was almost expected of late but still very much appreciated. The wonderful day brought the Celendine and Thrift to full flower.

The lovely sunset tonight from the island.
