12th January 2024

Weather: NE force 3/4,  NW 0/1 in the afternoon

After the 36 Great Crested Grebe recorded yesterday, one single on the flat calm sea at the north end was a bit of a disappointment, until a Slavonian Grebe popped up next to it !

The Slavonian Grebe spent most of the time around the whaleback area and later drifted down the west side of the island at dusk. The prolonged stay near the island allowed time for some members to go across and obtain photos.

There have been less than a handful of records of Slavonian Grebe here over the last 10 years. A good count was had of 505 Brent Geese which were all on the sea west of Middle as the tide made, three male Goosander were with them. Wader counts today included 240 Grey Plover, 160 Curlew, 98 Bar-tailed Godwit and 10 Purple Sandpipers. A couple of the Redshank are now regularly visiting the pond.

Four of the regular Eiders were still here and of course the Kestrel. The Fox was seen in the garden next to the obs.
