16th April 2023

Weather: SE force 3, light rain, by late morning SE 4 with drizzle

It was wetter than the forecast this morniong, also not very warm. Many Meadow Pipits were seen arriving from the north, perhaps 400 in total, while about 6 Wheatears landed briefly on their way through the island, some seem to have particularly liked the island buildings today.

The Pink-footed geese did not let the inclement weather to discourage them, about 400 headed off north this morning.

It was no surprise that hirundine passage was sluggish, just 4 Swallows and 3 Sand Martins were noticed, and only 3 phylloscopus warblers made it to  the island this morning and a single Willow Warbler was ringed today. Other small passage birds included a White Wagtail and 15 Goldfinches. Highlight on the sea was a Great Northern Diver flying east passed the north end, while a couple of Red-throated Divers were also seen. About 20 Gannets gave a good display of diving, a Great Crested Grebe, 18 Common Scoter and 2 Guillemots were logged and 4 Common Terns were distantly seen amongst the 40 odd Sandwich Terns feeding around the island.

A Harbour Porpoise showed well off the north end and our photographer's skill managed to capture it in motion.

The first Whimbrel of the autumn announced its presence between the islands and there was a curious flying quartet of 3 Bar-tailed and 1 Black-tailed Godwit, the usual waders included 4 remaining Purple Sandpipers and 62 Redshank.

There were 24 Brent sighted today, more than in recent days, possibly they have arrived from elsewhere. Eleven Shelduck were an encouraging sight from the coming breeding season.

Four Little Egrets fed after the tide. The regular pair of Eider are also looking interested.

Ringed: 4 Linnets, 1 Willow Warbler.
