19th April 2023

Weather: ENE force 4, E4/5 in the afternoon.

A much quieter morning with just 6 Willow Warblers and  2 Chiffchaffs today but there was both male and female Blackcap feeding in the Blackthorn and having yellow faces to prove it.

Other migrants during the day were 16 Swallows, 2 Sand Martins and a House Martin, 13 Goldfinch, and 9 Wheatears including 7 that were Greenland types,

Among the waders, Whimbrel are now starting to appear in numbers.

 There were 25 Redshank....

and still 5 Purple Sandpipers. Two Harbour Porpoise continue the regular sightings recently, while on the sea were 4 Red-throated Divers, 21 Common Scoter, 15 Great Crested Grebes, 15 Guillemots, about 50 Sandwich Terns, a male Red-breasted Merganser, 5 Razorbills, a Manx Shearwtaer and 12 Gannets.

No Brent were seen today, perhaps they have all gone, unlike the Pink-footed Geese in the estuary travelling out, but only 250 flew north today. Five local Shelduck and 2 Canada Geese were logged, while the pair of Eider were still about.

There was no noticeable movement of Meadow Pipits today, but the breeding birds were nest building.
