Weather: WSW force 3 veering N in the afternoon. sunny
The first Swallows came through today, there were 9 all told and a single House Martin (also first of the year). To complete the set, 11 Sand Martins were logged. Quite a number of White Wagtails were present plus a couple of Pied. Just a single Chiffchaff today and 6 Goldfinches and a passing Starling.
The Red-legged Partridge still roams the island and the usual Woodpigeons arrived ( 3 today). Twenty Red-breasted Mergansers were noted, no Goosanders here today but the 4 Eider were. Still about 120 Brent present, we think the rest may have departed.
On the sea were 1 Red-throated Diver, 8 Great Crested Grebes, 6 Guillemot and 2 Sandwich Terns. It was another big tide today, the best of the waders were the 3,000 Dunlin about the island and 22 Bar-tailed Godwit. A Common Seal was swimming out towards the sea after being disturbed by Middle Eye.
Rock Pipits are now a regular breeding species on the island. The sun was out all day bringing the insects to life, such as this Buff tailed Bumblebee .
A point of interest is the light on the island which at a mere 3 metres in height is (according to Trinity house) the smallest lighthouse n the UK.
