20th April 2023

Weather: ENE force 4,  haze later

It was cold this morning and felt more like early spring but his afternoon it warmed up and soon the hirundines arrived. Sand Martins (18) and Swallows (68) and a single House Martin moved through heading into the easterly breeze.

Five Willow Warblers and an equal number of Chiffchaffs made it here with 7 Greenland Wheatears,

The finches featured 11 Goldfinch, 4 Redpolls, 3 Siskin, while 3 White Wagtails came down.

Not all of the Siskin were 'flyovers'

A Woodpigeon and 4 Jackdaws flying east also seemed to think it was early spring.

The regulation 2 Canada Geese did not let us down and Pink-footed Geese flew north, but only 50 this morning. Eight Whimbrel were here today, continuing the increase,

..... while the star wader was a Golden Plover in addition to 2 Grey Plover and 18 Ringed Plover. Over 3,000 Dunlin were around the island, 45 Sanderling on the shore and the 5 Purple Sandpipers have not left yet. The usual look at the sea at high tide revealed 6 Gannets, 3 Red-throated Divers, 21 Guillemot, 25 Sandwich tern and a Red-breasted Merganser.

There were 5 Little Egrets and 2 Grey Herons and both Kestrel and Peregrine were recorded. Six Shelduck were on the shore around the island.

The island Blackbirds seem to have large young already.

Small Tortoiseshell was one of the butterflies in the sun today.
