25th April 2023

Weather: E force 1,  NNE 3 in the afternoon.

The day started with Pink-footed geese doing there thing of moving north at this time, there were 46 this morning. It was generally a fairly quiet day with some highlights. Just 3 Willow Wablers and 3 Greenland Wheatears made iot to the island but there was a good passage of over 70 Swallows, 13 Sand Martins and 4 House Martins. At least 8 White Wagtails arrived and a Yellow Wagtail called over, as did a Tree Pipit. Five Redpoll and 8 Goldfinch were the finches to keep the Linnets company. Four Collared Doves made a nice change from Woodpigeons. Bird of the day however would be a Little Ringed Plover that flew in by the gutter and was watched flying out over the east hoyle, Little Ringed Plover is less than annual at Hilbre. A pair of Eiders were still here and other wildfowl included 2 Canada geese and a Greylag. Six Gannets were logged, also 11 Common Scoter and 9 Red-brreasted Mergansers. As usual at this time in spring Whimbrels were the pick of the waders, 15 were seen/heard today in addition to many species in small numbers, for example 52 Sanderling and 4 Purple Sandpiper. A Common Seal was amongst the Grey Seals and a small Tortoiseshell butterfly flitted about. One of our founder members was on the island today, on his ninetieth birthday. Happy Birthday Tony Bell.
