6th April 2009

Another cool morning in a strong southeasterly did not feel 'right' but managed to bring the first 5 Willow Warblers for the year, three arriving simultaneously in the Newton trap at 07:00hrs. Other small birds were scarce apart from 50+ Meadow Pipits, 6 White Wagtails, 2 Goldfinches, 2 Swallows, a Chaffinch and 2 splendid male Wheatears (left).
Two Peregrines harried the waders and the Merlin (below) was back on its west cliff ledges after not being seen over the weekend.

A Raven flew south parallel with the West Kirby shore and a Black-tailed Godwit mixed with the Oystercatchers as they moved about at high tide. Also arriving at high tide was a Little Egret (below) that was still on the rocks after the tide had ebbed.

A single adult Gannet flew close to the island, as did 2 more Sandwich Terns (above), and 3 (out of 12 )Common Scoters (below left) were near the east side although a Red-throated diver was distant.

Ringed today:- 5 Willow Warblers (right),
3 Meadow Pipits,
3 Linnets,
1 Wren.
