2nd October 2021

 Weather: ESE force 5

A breezy but relatively quiet dayat the island. An adult winter Mediterranean Gull near to Little Eye at high tide was seen to be colour ringed and on checking out the markings it was found to have been ringed in Poland as a chick in May 2018 and had also been recorded in Belfast that year, then Cornwall in 2019 before finally appearing at Thurstaston in July this year. It is always rewarding to be able to trace the history of individual birds.

A couple of Red-throated Divers were near to the island and one showed to good effect the summer plumage that it still retained.

Other sea birds noted were 4 Great Crested Grebes, 8 Common Scoter and a Guillemot. An outstanding 21 Little Egrets were with the 6 Grey Herons feeding about the islands. Kestrel and Peregrine again featured and the Brent included 1 dark-bellied bird amongst the 48 present. Curlew numbered 220 and there were 3 Bar-tailed Godwits.
