5th May 2023

Weather: SE force 3/4,  later WNW 1  showers

The Bluebells are now near their best at the south end.

Highlight of a typical spring morning was a fly through by a Hobby, our first this year, which is still a scarce bird at Hilbre despite more records in recent years. We were alerted by the local Linnets, Swallows and Pipits. A record shot only was possible as it sped through the island.

About a dozen Willow Warblers were here today together with several of the larger warblers including Blackap, Sedge Warbler and Whitethroat.

Two of our first Swifts this spring flew east over Middle early morning. A small passage of 50 Swallows was accompanied by 3 Sand Martins and 7 House Martins and also during the day a White Wagtail, and 3 Redpolls and 3 Goldfinches. A sea watch produced 60 Gannets, 70 Sandwich and 100 Common Terns.

A lot of the Dunlin roosted the tide on the island,

The odd summer plumage Turnstone was amongst them.

Stars of the waders and most photogenic were once agian the 31 Whimbrel.

The 3 Eiders are still here, one of the 2 drakes resting on the rocks.
