8th May 2023

 Weather:  ESE force 4   rain

A leisurely start to the proceedings this morning as rain early made migrants seem unlikely, but as the rain eased mid morning a bright warbler was seen in the Sk trap. It  was the only warbler so far found and it was a splendid Wood Warbler! It becomes our 11th record since 1957 but only the third in the last 25 years (2014 and 2017) Ten have occurred in May with only one in April (30th April 2017)

Eventually 3 Willow Warblers arrived, a Whitethroat was seen again and a Sedge warbler was caught and ringed.

As expected other migrants were few, a Swift flew through, a Redpoll was heard and just 2 Greenland Wheatears landed on the island. Eight Whimbrel called in the morning and 20 Ringed Plover were seen. The 4 Eider were here (3 males, one of them immature, as well as a female), also 4 Little Egret. Fifty Sandwich and 15 Common Terns were noted with a Guillemot on the sea. A quiet morning then but an exciting one, it only takes one bird !
