9th October 2022

Weather: SE force 3

A dawn start this morning to give some time on the island before the flooding tide.

It turned out to be a once a year type day when the second Yellow-browed Warbler of the autumn (the first a week ago) was caught in the 'heli' trap and ringed.

Shortly afterwards the first Firecrest of the year was on the island and was this time caught in the SK trap.

Along with these fabulous birds plenty of other migrants were found including 2 Chiffchaffs, a Goldcrest, over 20 Meadow Pipits travelling south, and 13 Starling doing the same, a Grey Wagtail and a Stonechat on Middle.

Another late Wheatear was at the north end.

Thirteen pink-footed Geese passed us by, 96 Brent were counted today and there was a Merlin and Snipe present. The usual waders included these Bar-tailed Godwits.

A couple of Grey Seals were on the island rocks.

Some of the 500 Cormorants were seen passing Little Eye.

Ringing: 1 Yellow-browed Warbler, 1 Firecrest, 1 Chiffchaff.
