10th June 2023

Weather : ESE force 3/4   haze and mist

Another good record this morning when a Spotted Flycatcher appeared on the old obs and canoe club fence.

Always one of the last regular migrant to arrive at Hilbre, this individual was late even by its own standards.

The 2 Goldfinches still stay around the island, possibly breeding here.

Two Curlew were on the list, also 8 Little Egret, Kestrel and Grey Heron. The main other happenings were among the insect world. An Emperor Dragonfly was seen over the 'air raid shelter' but disappeared before one was found in the 'heli' trap.

A little later 4 were seen (3 males and a female) over the island pond

For a short time a Broad-bodied Chaser joined them, while both Common Blue and Blue-tailed Dmselflies were also there. The Red Admiral influx continued, 25 today together with a Green-viened White, 3 Small Whites and a Cinnabar moth. Last evening conditions looked good again for deploying the moth trap.

Results this morning included the following:-

Dark Arches

Common Swift

Small Square-spot
